Over the next month, I'll have trash cans, in gyms to recycle water
and juice bottles.
Let’s all do our part. Each month we want to hear from you with new ideas
and programs in your community to Go Green.
The BEST Green Programs will be listed each month on this page. Here are our top picks for this month:
1. From Mark: "Here at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Phoenix, one of the Green things we are doing is to encourage folks to cancel their unwanted, unread catalogs. Go to www.catalogchoice.org and get started."
2. From Django: "A great resource for recycling questions in or around the Portland metro area is "find a recyler." This tool allows you to locate facilities that accept various recyclables that you cannot get curbside service on (old electronics, foam packing, batteries, shoes, phone books, etc.). It also, in some instances, tells you where you can donate it as well."
3. From Bill at Parr Lumber Co: "We have a pretty big green campaign and heavily promote green building practices: engineered wood products such as I-Joists, wafer board plywood that can be taken from sustainable forests and we don't need to harvest our old growth forests. We teach how to save energy in your home, how to build a smart/green home, and how to minimize your impact on the environment."
REDUCE REUSE AND RECYCLE.
Just take a product or materials and when you think
your
going to throw it away,
think again and turn it into useable raw materials
to make another product.
It’s time to recycle and reuse everything that we can. According to the Environmental
Protection Agency each person in the US creates almost four and a half pounds
of trash each day.
Check with your local city to understand what and how to recycle on a regular basis.
Recycling FACTS
METALS
• An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!
• There are no limits to the amount of times an aluminum can can be recycled
• More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product
PLASTIC/STYROFOAM
• Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator
• Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic bottles every hour
GLASS
• A modern glass bottle would take 4,000 years or more to decompose — and even longer if it's in the landfill
• Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper.
All of these jars are recyclable!

WATER
• Turn off the water faucet when brushing your teeth. This simple act can save 9 gallons of water every time you brush
• Washing machines use about 15% of your house's water. Each cycle uses 32 to 59 gallons —
as much as two showers
ENERGY
• GE Energy Smart light bulbs use 70 – 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer, saving up to $59 on energy during the life of the bulb.
• BITS Ltd. smart power strips: Even after turning off a computer, power continues to flow to computer peripherals
like printers and scanners. This power strip ($32.99) stops the energy from being wasted. www.bitsltd.net
PAPER
• Americans throw out about 85% of the office paper that we use
• We save 17 trees for each ton of recycled newspaper
• Most cities recycle paper
Keep the info coming and we'll keep posting.
